By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Wood Brothers Racing Day

WHEREAS, Wood Brothers Racing formed in 1950 when family patriarch Glenn Wood decided to try racing at Morris Speedway and went on to race on the beach in Daytona, winning many races on the fledgling NASCAR circuit and becoming one of NASCAR’S 50 Greatest Drivers; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Wood shifted from driver to owner in 1965, and twenty of NASCAR’S Greatest Drivers have driven for Wood Brothers Racing, including Curtis Turner, Tiny Lund, Fireball Roberts, Bob Welborn, Dale Jarrett, A.J. Foyt, Glenn Wood, Buddy Baker, Marvin Panch, Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, Ned Jarrett, Fred Lorenzen, David Pearson, Joe Weatherly, Ralph Earnhardt, Neil Bonnett, Ricky Rudd, Mark Martin, and Bill Elliott; and

WHEREAS, Wood Brothers Racing has won races in seven different decades, including the team’s 98th victory, winning the 2011 Daytona 500 with rookie sensation Trevor Bayne, and their 99th victory at Pocono in 2017 with driver Ryan Blaney; and

WHEREAS, in the beginning, Glenn Wood enlisted family members to work on his car and serve as the pit crew on race weekends, including his youngest brother and chief mechanic Leonard Wood, who was with the team from inception; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Wood’s children took over the team in the late 80’s, including Len and Eddie Wood and Kim Wood Hall overseeing day to day team operations; and

WHEREAS, the third generation is now carrying on the family legacy, including Jon and Keven Wood, and Jordan Wood Hicks, all three having an ownership stake in the race team and working in their respective roles within the team leadership; and

WHEREAS, Wood Brothers Racing, one of the most successful racing teams in NASCAR history, has been exclusively and continuously headquartered in Stuart, Virginia for the past 73 years and holds the Guinness World Record for the longest active NASCAR racing team; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is proud to honor Wood Brothers Racing’s significant contributions to stock car racing and to our Commonwealth and nation by recognizing April 2 as Wood Brothers Racing Day;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize April 2, 2023, as WOOD BROTHERS RACING DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
