By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
African Diaspora Heritage Month
WHEREAS, the African diaspora comprises millions of people in the United States, representing a diverse and vibrant community whose contributions have enriched the nation's cultural, social, and economic fabric; and
WHEREAS, members of the African diaspora contribute significantly to the vitality, diversity, and talent of the Commonwealth of Virginia through their dedication to family, community, and service; and
WHEREAS, September is observed as African Diaspora Heritage Month, providing an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions and enduring legacy of the African diaspora community; and
WHEREAS, in 2022 the Commonwealth of Virginia was first in the Nation to designate September as African Diaspora Heritage Month, recognizing the history, heritage, and contributions of communities of African descent; and
WHEREAS, cultural and community organizations across the Commonwealth support and celebrate the African diaspora through cultural programs, advocacy, education, and community resources; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia remains committed to celebrating the achievements and contributions of the African diaspora, fostering cross-cultural relationships, and promoting greater understanding;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize September 2026 as AFRICAN DIASPORA HERITAGE MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
