WHEREAS, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are an umbrella term describing a range of physical, behavioral, and developmental challenges that may occur in individuals exposed to alcohol before birth; and

WHEREAS, FASD can affect individuals in areas such as communication, social interaction, growth, cognition, and daily functioning, and may be accompanied by medical conditions that impact quality of life; and

WHEREAS, early diagnosis and individualized intervention can improve lifelong outcomes, support successful transitions to adulthood, and foster greater independence; and

WHEREAS, promoting alcohol-free pregnancies to prevent FASD and ensuring individuals living with FASD and their families have access to appropriate support and resources are essential to advancing health and well-being; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia remains committed to supporting health care professionals and human service organizations while promoting access to resources and services for individuals living with FASD and their families;

NOW THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize September 2026 as FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDERS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
