WHEREAS, gastroparesis is a chronic disorder, meaning "paralysis of the stomach," that impairs the stomach's ability to empty properly and can cause debilitating pain, nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and serious complications, including malnutrition, dehydration, significant weight loss, and profound fatigue; and

WHEREAS, gastroparesis remains a relatively underrecognized condition, with no known cure and limited effective treatment options; and

WHEREAS, gastroparesis advocates work to advance research, improve treatment options, raise public awareness, expand access to care and support, and foster hope for individuals and families affected by the condition; and

WHEREAS, Gastroparesis Awareness Month is an opportunity to encourage greater understanding about the devastating effects of gastroparesis in both the general public and the medical community and promote awareness of this condition for the good of public health; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia remains committed to advancing research, promoting improved treatment options, and supporting individuals and families affected by gastroparesis;

NOW THEREFORE I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize August 2026, as GASTROPARESIS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
