By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Parkinson’s disease affects nearly one million Americans, including an estimated 12,000 Virginians, and is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease; and

WHEREAS, approximately 90,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s each year, a number expected to rise as the population ages, increasing the need for early detection and coordinated care across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is home to multiple Parkinson’s treatment and research centers, including programs at VCU Health, UVA Health, Carilion Clinic, and Sentara Healthcare, which provide specialized care, clinical trials, and support services; and

WHEREAS, symptoms of Parkinson’s disease — including tremors, stiffness, slowed movement, and balance difficulties — can significantly impact daily life, yet early diagnosis and evidence-based therapies can improve long term outcomes; and

WHEREAS, caregivers, families, and support organizations across Virginia play a vital role in helping individuals with Parkinson’s maintain independence, quality of life, and community connection; and

WHEREAS, increased public awareness promotes earlier recognition of symptoms, reduces stigma, and encourages investment in research aimed at improving treatments and ultimately finding a cure; and

WHEREAS, April provides an opportunity to honor those living with Parkinson’s disease, support their caregivers, and reaffirm the Commonwealth’s commitment to advancing research, education, and compassionate care;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize April 2026, as PARKINSON’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
