By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Poetry Month

WHEREAS, poetry has long served as a powerful form of expression, reflection, and storytelling, enriching cultures and communities across generations; and


WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia has a distinguished literary heritage, home to poets whose voices have shaped American literature and inspired readers across the nation; and


WHEREAS, poetry encourages creativity, strengthens literacy, and provides young people with meaningful opportunities to explore language, identity, and imagination; and


WHEREAS, the Virginia Poet Laureate program highlights the work of distinguished poets who promote poetry throughout the Commonwealth, supporting readings, workshops, and community engagement; and


WHEREAS, colleges, universities, libraries, and community arts organizations across Virginia—including the Virginia Festival of the Book, local writing centers, and public library poetry series—provide opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in readings, workshops, and creative writing programs; and


WHEREAS, Poetry Month offers an opportunity to celebrate the written word, uplift diverse voices, and encourage all Virginians to explore the beauty and power of poetry;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize April 2026, as POETRY MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and encourage all residents to bring awareness to the beauty and power of poetry.
