By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Scleroderma Awareness Month and Scleroderma Awareness Day

WHEREAS, scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by excessive production and accumulation of collagen in the skin and internal organs, resulting in the formation of scar-like tissue; and

WHEREAS, while the cause of scleroderma remains unknown and there is currently no known cure, a wide range of treatments are available that help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of complications; and

WHEREAS, diagnosis is often challenging and may take three to five years for individuals with scleroderma to receive an accurate diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, patient advocates, caregivers, researchers, and organizations work collaboratively to raise awareness, provide support for those affected, and advance research toward improved treatments and, ultimately, a cure; and

WHEREAS, promoting awareness among healthcare professionals and the public helps advance efforts toward earlier detection and diagnosis, resulting in improved patient outcomes; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia acknowledges residents of our community living with scleroderma who demonstrate strength and resilience as they navigate complex medical challenges; and

WHEREAS, Scleroderma Awareness Month and Scleroderma Awareness Day provide an opportunity to increase awareness, promote understanding, and encourage support for individuals affected by scleroderma;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize June 2026, as SCLERODERMA AWARENESS MONTH and June 29, 2026, as SCLERODERMA AWARENESS DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call these observances to the attention of all our citizens.
