WHEREAS, National Surveyors Week offers a moment to recognize one of the nation’s most enduring and influential professions; and  

WHEREAS, the creation of the Public Land Survey System in 1785 supported the establishment of towns, transportation networks, and public institutions across 30 different states; and 

WHEREAS, land surveying has played a critical role in developing satellite-based systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), artificial intelligence, and emerging 3D mapping and measuring tools; and 

WHEREAS, in the 19th century, surveyors helped map individual counties and create accurate diagrams of the Commonwealth of Virginia; and  

WHEREAS, National Surveyors Week is an opportunity to celebrate the powerful legacy of the men and women who measure, map, and shape this nation to build an innovative and sustainable future; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize the week of March 15-20, 2026, as SURVEYORS WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
