WHEREAS, Virginia farmers cultivate apple trees on approximately 9,600 acres across the Commonwealth, producing a diverse variety of apples, including Albemarle Pippin, Crimson Crisp, Fuji, Gala, Ginger Gold, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Jonathan, McIntosh, Red Delicious, Rome, Stayman, and York; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2025, the Commonwealth’s apple production reached 149 million pounds, ranking seventh nationally and generating $44.5 million; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia’s apple harvest extends from early August through late October, and with advanced storage technologies, is available nearly year-round; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia apple country includes the mountainous region that stretches through the Shenandoah Valley and Roanoke Valley, from Frederick County in the north to Carroll County in the Southwest; and

 

WHEREAS, apple orchards provide family-friendly agritourism experiences that draw visitors from across the Commonwealth to enjoy seasonal activities and learn more about agriculture by picking fruit directly from the source; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia Grown apples are celebrated with the Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth during Virginia Farm to School Week, recognizing the work of schools and communities to include local, seasonal produce on school menus; and

 

WHEREAS, apples can be processed into many different value-added products such as applesauce, apple cider, jams, pies, and vinegar, many of which are part of the Virginia's Finest program; and

 

WHEREAS, Virginia apples are a nutritious fruit that is low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol, low calorie, high-fiber, and a great source of Vitamin C;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize October 2026, as VIRGINIA APPLE MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
