Proclamations

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Virginia Police Week
WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed the first presidential proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week, thereby establishing a national tradition of honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the United States; and
WHEREAS, the safety, security, and well-being of all Virginians are essential to the continued prosperity of the Commonwealth's families, communities, and institutions; and
WHEREAS, police officers throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia faithfully and diligently serve in communities large and small, enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, safeguarding public order, and working tirelessly to protect residents, visitors, neighborhoods, schools, and businesses; and
WHEREAS, these officers willingly assume risks each day in the performance of their duties, often placing themselves in harm's way to ensure the protection of others and the preservation of public safety; and
WHEREAS, the families of police officers also bear profound sacrifices, offering steadfast support as their loved ones serve in demanding and often dangerous roles, and demonstrating resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Virginians hold in high regard the courage, professionalism, and steadfast dedication demonstrated by the Commonwealth's local, state, and other public sector law enforcement officers, recognizing that the peace and security enjoyed by our communities depend upon the integrity and commitment with which these officers carry out their responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day provide meaningful opportunities for all Virginians to honor and remember those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, to express gratitude to those who continue to serve with distinction, and to acknowledge the enduring strength and sacrifices of their families;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize May 10-16, 2026, as VIRGINIA POLICE WEEK, and May 15, 2026, as PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call these observances to the attention of all our citizens.
