By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Women Veterans Week

WHEREAS, throughout the history of the United States, women have served with distinction in the Armed Forces, contributing to the defense and security of the nation since the earliest days of military service; and

WHEREAS, in 1948, the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act formally recognized the permanent role of women in the military, marking a significant milestone in expanding opportunities for women to serve their country; and

WHEREAS, over subsequent decades, women have continued to break barriers in military service, including expanded roles in leadership, aviation, and combat positions, demonstrating the ultimate sacrifice made for protecting our freedoms; and

WHEREAS, women veterans represent one of the fastest-growing populations within the veteran community, contributing their talents and experiences to the workforce, civic life, and communities across the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Women Veterans Week is observed nationally as a time to recognize and honor the service, sacrifice, and achievements of women who have served in the Armed Forces, while also raising awareness of the unique challenges they may face during and after military service; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to supporting women veterans in all aspects of their service, and encouraging all citizens to honor their service;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize the week of March 15-21 2026 as WOMEN VETERANS WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
